Meno Time - Menopause Support

Menopause can be devastating

When Benjamin Franklin wrote that “nothing is certain but death and taxes” it is hard not to see this is a purely male perspective on life’s inevitabilities.

Had he been a woman, or bothered to seek a female opinion, he might well have added menopause to his sardonic list.

Whatever lifestyle, level of fitness, diet, marital status, sexuality or philosophy a woman might pursue, at some point her body will present her with a completely arbitrary and unwelcome set of changes to deal with.

Physical or mental conditions have no bearing on the matter, nor does the experience of childbirth.

A small minority will pass through this period of change with a minimum of discomfort; but they are the lucky ones.

For most women it is a phase of life in which they seem to lose control over their bodies, experiencing hot and cold flashes, night sweats, lack of sleep, poor digestion and various other symptoms that can completely undermine self-confidence and any feeling of well-being.

The severity and frequency of these episodes can vary greatly from an occasional inconvenience to constant recurrence with little or no respite which can be utterly debilitating.

For most these symptoms will persist for up to ten years, for some even longer.

It doesn’t have to be

Any menopausal woman reading this will have rolled her eyes by now thinking “tell me something I didn’t know”, but the truth is that it’s a subject rarely broached in ‘polite’ society.

Men don’t understand it and younger women don’t appreciate its full impact, which makes sufferers feel all the more isolated and vulnerable.

There is no ‘cure’ but there are medical treatments available, mainly HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) through which doctors attempt to balance the body’s biology by ‘topping up’ the hormones that are being lost through the changes that trigger menopause.

The problem is that this comes with its own dangers, namely the possibility that HRT can increase the risk of breast cancer and heart failure.

The medical community is quite divided on the subject and there are plenty of studies on both sides providing evidence to support and refute the arguments.

The accepted wisdom seems to be that if the symptoms of menopause are so severe that they are negatively impacting the quality of life of the sufferer, then the risks of HRT are certainly worth taking, but for a limited time only.

After that, it's back to dealing with the problems as best you can.

If you are considering a course of HRT you should consult your GP and ensure that you are fully informed before making a decision.

But there are some natural alternatives which have been used by women in various parts of world for centuries and which have gained a reputation for providing support and relief from the symptoms of menopause.

Natural stabilisers

Take Evening Primrose Oil, for example which hundreds of thousands of women use to calm the ravages of hot flashes and night sweats.

Many will have had the secret passed onto them by mothers or grandmothers who also used the oil and credit it with helping them achieve respite.

In South America the juice of a particular species of Yam is believed to have a positive effect on digestion, while the Pfaffia plant (known as Brazilian Ginseng) has been used for centuries in local herbal remedies.

American and Japanese studies have found that Pfaffia mimics natural hormone control and can help to modify emotional change and reduce mood swings.

Aloe Vera is well known among herbalists to reduce blood sugar and has been in constant use since the 16th Century BC as a natural medicine.

Then there are powerful anti-oxidants like Atriplex and Black Cohosh which help protect the body’s core functions.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to blend all these together?

We think so.
