Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

A natural oil to make the cogs turn easier

To those of us of a certain age the coconut is largely associated with trips to the fun fair and young men or dads demonstrating the prowess of their throwing arm (before insisting that “the bloody things are nailed down”).

Entirely misnamed, being neither a branch of the cocoa genus or a nut (it is actually a drupe), the coconut is certainly one of nature’s less prepossessing fruits, with a protective shell that would shame Kevlar.

In recent years, however, several clinical trials have indicated that the coconut and its derivatives may provide a range of natural health benefits that include boosting brain functions and preventing dementia.

It’s also a powerful antibiotic and antiviral which can ward off coughs, colds, and even stomach and skin infections.

The coconut comes of age

Until very recently the coconut was regarded with suspicion by nutritionists because it is largely comprised of saturated fats.

As more has been discovered about the relationships between fats, sugars, weight gain and heart disease these fears have subsided, many experts pointing to the health of those who live in the areas where coconuts are a firmly fixed element in the daily diet.

In fact the indigenous populations who rely on the coconut as part of their staple diet are among the healthiest on the planet.

So it should be no surprise that there have now been over 1,500 studies indicating the health benefits of this strange fruit.

It’s all to do with fatty acids

The secret weapon in the coconut’s armoury is what we now know as healthy fats, in particular a group of acids called Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) including caprylic acid, lauric acid and capric acid.

These make up over 60% of coconut oil and they behave very differently from the long chain fatty acids found in other organic plant oils, namely;

More easily digested

Harder to store as fat because it is processed by the liver

Anti-microbial and anti-fungal

Smaller cell size allowing them to be processed into energy more quickly

The health benefits of this make a long list.

An energy boosting fat burner

Clinical trials have indicated that coconut oil can increase the energy expended by the body by as much as 5% compared to the same amount of other foods.

At around 25mg per day that can mean an extra 120 calories burned off, a significant contribution to your daily ration.

A natural antibiotic

Almost half of the fatty acid content in coconut oil is lauric acid, this is turned by the body into a powerful anti-infection agent which attacks pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

It has been shown to fight urinary tract infections (UTI) and kidney infections as well as generally boosting the effectiveness of the immune system.

A blood regulator

The latest studies, some of them already covered here in the MHM, have demonstrated how saturated fats can actually help to regulate cholesterol and blood pressure.

They increase the amount of HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) lowering LDL levels and improving the blood’s antioxidant and coagulating functions.

All of these effects help to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.

An anti-inflammatory

An Indian study revealed that the high levels of antioxidants in coconut oil reduce inflammation and act as an analgesic to relieve arthritis pain

A brain booster

A study published in the Journal of Neurobiology and Ageing found that MCFA’s improved the memories of older subjects.

MCFA’s are absorbed more easily into the body and are able to fuel brain cells more efficiently.

A guard against osteoporosis

Two of the main contributors to the condition of osteoporosis are oxidative stress and free radicals both of which are prey to the high levels of antioxidants crammed into coconut oil.

It also increases the rate of calcium absorption. Research has shown that coconut oil not only increases bone volume but reduces the bone loss due to osteoporosis.

A cure for candida and yeast infections

A study published in the journal of Anti-microbial Agents and Chemotherapy revealed that the capric and lauric acids in coconut oil were an effective natural treatment for candida albicans and yeast infections.

A balancing act

The high level of lauric acid in coconut oil can also help to balance the body’s hormones. Many studies have shown that the oil can increase oestrogen levels in women during menopause.
